Drawrch 2024 #21: Flip Phone

Martin · 28 days
An illustration of a man talking on a flip phone. The man is facing to the right and his eyes are looking to the right, away from the viewer. His left hand is holding a flip phone up to his head. He has a slightly concerned look on his face, and his mouth is slightly open and crooked to the side. He has a light complexion, blue-green eyes, stubbly brown facial hair and very short brown hair. His hairline is receding. He is wearing a light blue dress shirt. Three lines are emanating from the man's forehead. The background is a streaky light turquoise that fades to white towards the bottom of the image.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a guy on his flip phone - that's three weeks of daily face drawings done!

I'm not really sure if I like this one or not. I like parts of it, and it's sort of pleasing to look at in its finished form. But I can't decide if I think it's good or not. It feels a little trapped between caricature and not, I guess?

The purpose of this project, and the others like it that I've done, haven't really been to always make good art, but just to get a daily session in, for practice. Still, I want them to be good (and sometimes they are!).

Anyway, as always, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Dry Brush paint brush for some shading and texture.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #20: Laughing 4

Martin · 29 days
An illustration of a woman looking downward and laughing. With her head pitched forward, her eyes are not visible except for a small glint of light in one eye. She has a stud nose piercing and large, fluffy hair. She is wearing a white top and overalls visible on one shoulder. The drawing is rendered with a single color and only pure black and white used for shadows and highlights.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman looking downward and laughing.

It took me a long time to get the sketch right on this one, because this is a funny angle to draw for me. I was also planning on making the singular color blue up until the very end, then decided it looked too Smurfy, and opting for something warmer. 😎

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Inka brush for everything else.

Drawrch 2024 #19: Sunglasses

Martin · 30 days
An illustration of a man in profile, wearing sunglasses, and looking down, presumably at a cell phone. The man has a mustache and beard, and thick dark hair that is styled high. He is squinting slightly, and has a solemn look, but his expression is mostly unreadable. He is wearing a spotted shirt. The image was rendered in unrealistic colors, with the man in pink and purple and the background a very light green-blue.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a man in sunglasses looking down at his cell phone.

I don't know why, but I was feeling a bit off with this one. I started out drawing the man's ear for some reason, and it took me a while to get my bearings right. After I finished the sketch, I decided to change things up a bit and use some weird colors. It's a little brighter than I wanted it to be, but overall, I like it.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for the background gradient.

Drawrch 2024 #18: Staring

Martin · 31 days
An illustration of a woman staring to the right. The drawing is in black and white and in a split style between caricature and comic book. The woman has a strong, square jaw, slightly pouted lips, and large hoop earrings. She has dark eyebrows and long flowing hair that fills the bottom half of the image. She has a serious look on her face. The shading in the image is accomplished through a halftone pattern.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman staring to the side, in black and white.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and brushes from True Grit Texture Supply for the rest. This includes the Smooth Natural Nib for linework, the Grainy Dot Shader (45 deg/light) for shading, and the Halftone Stamp 7 for background texture.

Drawrch 2024 #17: Long Face

Martin · 32 days
An illustration of an old man with a long, distorted face. The man has a light, green-yellow complexion, red eyes, and scraggly blue hair with a bald top. He looks gaunt and has a neutral expression on his face. He is facing to the left and his head is distorted forward at the top. He is wearing a green and yellow polka-dot shirt that is open near the top, and a harsh light illuminates him from the left.

For today's Drawrch illustration, I thought I'd go without a reference and just do a cartoon, so here's a weird old man with a long face. 😆

I experimented a bit with distorting the face before drawing over the sketch. I think it helped accentuate the strangeness of it.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and Soft air brush for background gradient.

Drawrch 2024 #16: Laughing 3

Martin · 33 days
An illustration of a woman laughing. The drawing is done in a style where only the highlights and shadows are drawn over the background color, which is a medium-dark yellow. The highlights and shadows are pure white and black. The woman is facing to the right and has her mouth slightly open. Her eyes are squinted. She has multiple earrings in her ear, and her hair is up, with stray hairs sticking out everywhere.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman laughing (hard!), done in a style where the highlights and shadows are drawn over a single background color. Inspired by a print of Kurt Vonnegut that I have hanging in my office.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Inka brush for everything else.

Drawrch 2024 #15: Working

Martin · 34 days
An illustration of a man looking down to the left, at an un-pictured monitor, drawn in comic book style. The man has a light complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. He has a mustache and beard, and is wearing a blue collared shirt. A bright light is illuminating the front of the man's face. The drawing is shaded flat, and given some dimension with halftone patterns. The background is an orange-red cut in the middle with a mustard yellow on top.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a man working on an (off canvas) computer, drawn in a comic book style.

I picked up some new brushes and textures for Procreate yesterday, and thought I'd try them out for today's Drawrch!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Syrup brush for some color fills. Additionally, I used brushes from True Grit Texture Supply, including the Smooth Natural Nib for linework, the Grainy Dot Shader (45 deg/light) for shading, and the Halftone Stamp 7 for background texture.

The pen I used wasn't overall too different from one of my go-to brushes, the Syrup brush, but I like the softer edge and small amount of noise that it adds. It's a little pressure sensitive for me, but it didn't take too long to get used to.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

You can find the brushes and textures used at True Grit Texture Supply.

Drawrch 2024 #14: Skeptical

Martin · 35 days
An illustration of a woman with a medium complexion, short dark hair up in a spikey do, and brown eyes. She is frowning slightly but her mouth looks almost like it might smile. Her head is resting on her hand and is looking directly at the viewer. She has on a dark top and the background is a light purple that fades to a faint gold at the bottom.

Here's today's Drawrch illustration - a woman with her head resting on her hand. That's two weeks of this project done already! 😀

I'm starting to get a bit tired of the chunky hashed shading I've been doing on some of these drawing… I feel like it's introducing a lot of texture where I don't really want it to. And giving me Van Gogh vibes that I'm not trying to inject. I'll probably move away from that a but for the second half of the month.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for just about everything else, and Soft air brush for a little bit of background shading.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #13: Laughing 2

Martin · 36 days
An illustration of a man laughing. The man is facing to the right and has a medium-dark complexion, dark eyes, a shaved head, and light beard and mustache. His mouth is open and smiling, and his eyes are squinted nearly shut. He is lit by a bright orange light on the right. The angle of the image is from slightly below.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of another person laughing, but this time from a slightly odd angle.

As was the case with Drawrch #11, it was a little difficult getting the sketch right for this one. I had to pay careful attention to the angles and not let my mind go on autopilot while drawing. In the end, I think I got it pretty close, though someday I'm going to have to go in and do a test to see just how close these get to the references. Not today, though! 😅

As usual, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for almost everything else, and the Soft air brush for a few gradients. I also added some noise to the background to push down the banding caused by my light usage of the air brush.

Drawrch 2024 #12: Looking Back

Martin · 37 days
An illustration of a woman facing to the left, looking back at the viewer. The woman has a light complexion, teal eyes, and dark hair. She has pink lipstick on and is wearing a dark leather jacket. Her hair has a bright orange highlight on the right, and the background is a blur of sunset sky and land. The drawing is done as a comic book style, with harsh black shadows and outlines.

For today's Drawrch illustration, I tried my hand at more of a comic style. This perhaps wasn't the best (reference) picture for it, since the lighting wasn't that harsh and I had to force it a bit, but I like how it turned out. It was fun studying/trying something adjacent to the type of stuff I normally do!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Studio Pen brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for shading.
