For Labor Day weekend, I emerged from the darkness and made my way back to Fremont Park for another round of Chalk It Up, a local even put on to help fund art grants around Sacramento. As has been the case for several years now, my company Massive Catapult Creative, Inc. sponsored a square.
This was the first year I returned to Fremont Park, where the event is normally held, since Covid-19 made 2020’s Chalk It Up a remote-only event, and 2021 remote-optional. It felt both comforting in its familiarity and a little wild to be out there again after all this time.
I had originally planned on doing a big elaborate piece that would fill the entire square – something I don’t usually do because of all the work it takes – but changed my plans at the last minute as a heat wave swept over Sacramento for the weekend, and I didn’t want to bake out in the sun.
The heat turned out to be a little milder than expected, but it was still quite hot, and plenty of people who walked by enjoyed my acknowledgement of the situation through my art: a giant fried egg and sizzling bacon, cooking on the sidewalk. It had the side-effect of also making people hungry.
I had this massive sandwich for lunch as the sun temporarily crept over my square:

Overall, I had a good time back at Fremont Park. I had fun making some art, and I was done pretty quickly. My neighbors were courteous and/or absent most of the time, which is always a plus. And I got a kick out of some people-watching afterward, as I waited for my family to come check it out.
Progress pictures and a few random shots of the event are included below!

As always Martin. Your ark work is so amazing. So realistic. 👍🏼
Thanks, Javier – glad you liked it!
