This year, I kicked off Labor Day weekend with yet another trip to Fremont Park for the annual Chalk It Up event. This was my twelfth Chalk It Up! 😮
I decided to recreate one of my June Toons illustrations, and I wanted to do something striking and colorful, so I went with the drawing I did of a Chameleon. I like the smooth gradients and bright pinks/yellows, and I thought it would look nice as chalk art on the pavement.
The line art is a little challenging to do in dry chalk because it can smudge easily and it’s hard to get very fine lines on the rough aggregate concrete. I opted not to outline everything like the source, but instead employed some thick lines around the undersides/edges of the piece, and I think that helped me keep things in order.
All in all, I had a great time being out there and doing another piece this year. It’s a fun even that has gotten better over time, and I’m glad that I’ve been able to be a part of it over the years.
