Drawrch 2024 #7: Grin

An illustration of a man looking to the right. He has a pale complexion, dark eyes, short dark hair that's parted on the side and oiled down, and a stubbled mustache, beard, and goatee. He is smiling slightly, and his face has been stylized like a caricature. He is wearing layers including a blue plaid shirt and tan coat. The background is a warm brown.

Here's today's Drawrch illustration. I was able to force myself to stay a little more stylized with this one, and managed to work some brush strokes in there too! That's the first week of Drawrch done already!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, the Soft air brush for gradients, and the Old Brush paint brush for added texture/light details.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #6: Curls

An illustration of a woman looking slightly sideways at the viewer, with her head turned and tilted a bit. She has a pale complexion, pink lipstick, blue eyes, and large glasses with round lenses. Her hair is brown and very curly. It is put up in the back, but many curls are falling down from her forehead over the side of her face.

For today's Drawrch illustration, I set out to draw something a little more cartoony than normal, and ended up drifting hard toward the stuff I've been doing for most of the rest of the drawings in this project so far. 😵

I guess I needed to focus more on sketching it cartoony? I don't know. It's been a long day, so I just wanted to get through it. I wish I could have spent more time on the hair though - the curls in the reference photo were crazy!

Anyway, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for almost everything else, and the Hartz brush for background texture.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #5: Plaid & Hat

An illustration of a man wearing a red plaid shirt and a hat. The man is looking to the left, away from the viewer. He has a dark complexion, dark eyes, and black hair and beard. He has a look of mild concern. The background is a very light green that fades to yellow.

Today's Drawrch illustration is a guy in a plaid shirt and a hat!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for some light shading.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #4: Hooded

An illustration of a woman wearing a scarf and hood. The woman is staring directly at the viewer, with an expressionless face. She has a light complexion, black hair, and green eyes. The sides of her face are shrouded in a hard black shadow. The scarf is light lavender and the hood is gray. The background is an olive green.

Today's Drawrch illustration is a hooded woman in the woods!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, the Soft air brush for gradients, and the Hartz brush for background texture.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #3: Night Lights

An illustration of a woman looking to the left. The woman has a light complexion, blond hair, and hazel eyes. She has a green top and black necklace, and she is lit by bright lights of a city at night. The background is a blur of color and points of light.

Today's Drawrch illustration came in late again - I got started late and it took 2 hours to finish - but I'm happy with how it turned out!

Normally I don't go for much airbrushing, but I think it really helped bring out some dimension with this one. It's cool how just a tiny touch of light or dark here and there really helped make it pop. The hair is a little funky, but whatever. It's done and tomorrow's drawing needs to be simpler!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft and Hard airbrushes for gradients and background details. I used the smudge tool with the Soft airbrush as well, to smooth out the highlights in the hair.

Drawrch 2024 #2: Distant Stare

An illustration of a man wearing sunglasses and looking out into the distance. The man has a medium complexion and dark hair. He has a light mustache, goatee, and stubble. His face is lit brightly from the front, and the view of the image is from slightly below him.

Here's my second illustration for Drawrch - nearly late, yikes! I got started quite late though, so I'm just glad I got something out today, I suppose. 😎

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for gradients.

Drawrch 2024 #1: Drawrch Begins

A retro-styled cartoon illustration of a man with a long face smiling and looking at the viewer. The man has a tuft of brown hair and is wearing a green shirt. The word "Drawrch" is written in chunky blue letters vertically down the right side of the image. The background is a textured yellow.

I wanted to kick this year's Drawrch off with something a little simple, so here's my retro cartoon-inspired Drawrch title card, with a little modern flair.

Drawrch is a month-long project where I create a new illustration of a face every day for the month of March. There are no style restrictions. I'll be posting each finished piece here and on social media. Check it out and follow along!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, the Soft airbrush for gradients, and the Hartz brush for background texture.

For my last Februdoodle illustration, I decided to make a representation of the extra day, via cookies! 🤤🍪

I streamed this one on Twitch - thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi and watch a bit. Whether you tuned in today or not though, I appreciate all the support throughout the month. It means a lot!

This project was a fun one and I'm happy to come away from it with another set of fun illustrations. I'll be taking a short break today and then... back tomorrow for Drawrch!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and that's about it. You will see a lot of experimentation at the end with the background, but none of that made it into the final.

If you want to watch all of my 2024 Februdoodle illustrations get done, there's a YouTube playlist for that, here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLx-veH80sJzh6ycF5MUvK7oEsSMiH4rvk

Februdoodle 2024 #28: Wood Pile

Today's Februdoodle is a wood pile! Based on a reference photo I took earlier today.

It being the 28th and all, normally this would've been the last in the series, but with this being a leap year, Februdoodle gets a bonus drawing tomorrow. Woohoo! 😀

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for just about everything else, and a small assist from the Soft air brush for background gradient.
