Inktober 2026 #18: Flightless

A black and white illustration of a penguin, kiwi, and emu standing together, wearing sunglasses. The penguin is in front on the left. It is an emperor penguin, and it is facing to the left. The kiwi is behind the penguin to the lower right. It is looking up into the air, but not toward the viewer. The emu is behind both other birds, above and to the center. It is facing slightly left of the viewer, and part of its body can be seeing behind the kiwi. All birds are wearing black, shiny sunglasses that are reflecting rays of light. The background is gray with a glow behind the birds.

Today's Inktober prompt was "flightless", and rather than trying to be clever about it, I decided to just draw three flightless birds. They're wearing sunglasses, of course. 😎

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, the Gouache brush and Soft air brush for shading, and the Splatter spray paint brush for background texture.

If you'd like to see how I drew this one, you can watch the time-lapse below:
