Too Many Fall Releases

I logged in and updated my games list to represent my recent game-buying spree. I added the following games:

  • Audiosurf (only $2.49 this week on Steam, thanks for the heads up, Xot!)
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
  • Commander Keen Complete Pack
  • Fable 2
  • Gears of War 2

I've still got one or two more I want to pick up, and like I've mentioned before, a couple others I'm putting on my Christmas list, but I'm really starting to get progressively angrier at game publishers for this mess. Seriously - I know everyone wants to have big sales for the holidays, but pace yourselves please! We can't all go out and buy a dozen games in one month, and many great games are going to suffer from poor sales because of this ridiculous overlap.

Penny Arcade summed it up pretty nicely here. It's eerie how similar this comic looks to my Google calendar where I've marked all the upcoming games I'm interested in.

Oh well. That's all for now. I'm feeling a bit under the weather and I need to recover... which means less time spent blogging, and more time spent laying on the couch, complaining to my girlfriend, and of course, playing games. Just gotta make sure I fit some rest in there somewhere!

This whole year has been amazing in terms of releases, but there really is a glut of games this season. Kinda makes me glad I don’t have a current gen console, it really simplifies things.

Still … Fallout 3 for PC is looks pretty F-ing sweet. Sorry, Will, I might have to pass on Spore. Valve, I love ya, but The Orange Box may have to wait a bit longer. Rockstar, I hardly knew ye, but GTA4 will always have a special place in my heart, even if I never play it. Pete, I want to believe in Fable 2, but the “only on Xbox” thing is a deal breaker. And, Wii: please stop looking at me like that … this year, really, I promise … or maybe next.

Now back to Mr. Robot, free on Game Tap.

I’ve been playing Fallout 3 for an embarassing amount of time now. There are some issues with the PC version (I kept crashing to the desktop after a few minutes of play until I uninstalled the Roxio suite that came with my DVD drive) and there are some engine-level things I wish they’d change, but I am completely satisfied with Bethesda’s effort.

I hope they come out with Fallout 4, making as vast a jump in gameplay as Fallout 2 was to Fallout 1.

  • Yeah, I never made it onto the Spore bandwagon. I wanted to get it eventually, but since the game didn’t turn out to be the earth-shattering experience everyone wanted it to be, I might just pass on it and wait for Sim City 5 (or whatever Will Wright’s got next on his list, sans Sims).

Normally, I’d pick up a game like Fallout 3 for PC, and not for the 360, but I had so many problems with Oblivion, on both of my computers, after playing the game for many many hours, I don’t want to risk the waste of time again.

It’s all just as well though, since I haven’t gotten the game for any platform yet, and I really only want to get one more game before I stop buying games this year – Wrath of the Lich King (World of Warcraft expansion). Oh, and maybe Left 4 Dead… I might put that one off for a while though, since I only have so much time to play all these games, and currently Gears 2 and Fable 2 are still hogging my gaming hours.
