Here's my twenty-eighth illustration for Drawrch!

After Drawrch #23, I swore I wasn't going to do another realistic one for this project, but after I got done with the initial sketch, I started experimenting with brushes I don't typically use, and got caught up in it.

I like going for realism and I don't. I like it because it's fun seeing something come together that looks like the reference. It's also good practice, of course. But I don't like it because it takes forever to finish a piece (at least, in terms of doing a daily drawing) and every time I get done, I can't help but look at it and see all the flaws. It's a balance.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Oil Paint and Dry Brush brushes for color, and the Stucco brush for blending.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

I really wanted this one to be better, but I just ran out of time today. It was a busy work day, and I had a lot of other things to do after hours that left me with only an hour or so to draw. That's still a good amount of time, but late in the day when I'm tired, it doesn't leave much room for mistakes. Anyway...

As usual, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Inka brush for everything else.

I thought I'd try another like Drawrch #14, and though I like how this one turned out, it's a little too zoomed in now that I think about it. It would've been better to show just a little more of the beanie, and the hair/coat. Oh well!

I feel slightly guilty about starting in with the cartoons on a Friday, but this day kind of got away from me and I wanted to make sure I got done with this early. It's good practice for drawing expressions anyway. 😉

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Hartz brush and Splatter spray paint brush for background texture.

Here's my twenty-third illustration for Drawrch!

This one is a little bit of a departure from what has been my usual Drawrch style... but I wanted to try my hand at a more realistic shading style. I used to do drawing like this all the time about 20 years ago, but I haven't really done many since. I think it turned out alright - at least for being as out of practice as I am!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Oil Pastel brush for everything else.

Sometimes simplicity pays off, and so I tried to keep the shading light for this one. I feel like I've really found a good style for these (when it works) using mostly just the Inka brush and a few strokes here and there for shading, but otherwise just large blocks of color.

Still, I'll probably do some different styles with these before the project runs its course at the end of the month.

As usual, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework and fills, the Hartz brush for background texture, and a small assist from the Soft air brush for shading.

Drawrch 2023 #21: Seeing Red

Here's my twenty-first illustration for Drawrch!

I was able to pull some good lighting out of a pretty softly lit reference photo this time. Nice!

I also managed to use a red base with purple shading and avoid having it veer off into Obama/hope poster territory. Not that I dislike those posters - the design is prolific - but that's why it's kitschy to borrow their style. It's been done too many times.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Inka brush for everything else.

Here's my twentieth illustration for Drawrch!

I struggled a lot with this one - you'll see if you watch the time-lapse - I just couldn't get the shading right. It kept looking more like a rash or skin condition rather than proper lighting. Sometimes, it's just really hard to do the shading on faces when the lighting isn't harsh.

It's a shame, because I liked how the initial sketch turned out, and that usually means I'll have an easy time with the final piece.

Anyway, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, a bunch of attempts at shading with the Flat brush, and then the Inka brush for everything else.
