Parks Test Render 3

This render is coming along!

I wasn't happy with how the volumetric material for the waterfall splashes looked, so I re-did those. I also pumped up the red and yellow contrast in the trees, and added some hedges.

I want to make some additional objects, like benches, lights, trash cans, etc. but I'm a bit worried about the can of worms that might open up. I've never done a proper scale test with the parts in this scene - that is, I've never dropped in a 2 meters tall human shape to see how things look in proportion - so I've been reluctant to add objects like that.

Just eyeballing it, things look mostly right. The hedges seem a bit chunky, maybe. Editing the width of them would be a pain, but... now I'm tempted. Maybe something I'll do further down the road.

Here's an update to the test render I posted last night!

I've made some changes to the way the park is laid out, mostly on the lower canal level, changed the camera to be isometric, and adjusted a few other things.

One of the bigger changes is the atmospheric effect and coloring, which is all currently being done in Blender's compositor, with color correction, and glare. I don't usually do it that way - I usually do color corrections in Photoshop - so this is sort of an experiment.

More updates to come, as I have time to work on this more!

I've been playing around with the pieces I made for the Modular Park renders back in 2016, adding some stuff, editing some others, and trying to just build up a collection of parts to make more pleasant places with. I made this test render today just to see how things are shaping up.

Still some work to do, but I do enjoy making cozy little outdoor spaces with these parts. 🙂

Fenced Alley

Martin · 2 years

I was looking through my photos the other day, searching for some paint color images, and I found a picture I took of an alley that I thought might be fun to do as an illustration. So I made this!

This is partly just some general illustration practice, and partly practice for an acrylic painting I want to do later this year. That painting won't be the same subject, but it's good to practice colors and form.

As with other recent illustrations, I used Procreate to make this. Sketched with the Procreate Pencil brush and painted with the Inka brush.

Here's a time-lapse, if you'd like to see how it all came together:

Here's my thirty-first illustration for Drawrch - the last in the series, and fittingly, a very tired-looking me in a self-portrait. It's not my best work, but it's what I did tonight.

For this one I used the Procreate Pencil brush to sketch, and the soft Airbrush for some fades here and there.

I really enjoyed this project, and I learned a lot of stuff. I'll probably write up a blog post about all that tomorrow. Now, it's time for a break!

Here's my thirtieth illustration for Drawrch - only one more to go!

I wanted to spend some more time playing with a rough brush, so once again I've used Procreate's Inka brush for most of the work. I used the Procreate Pencil brush for the sketch, and the soft Airbrush for the background.

Based on a reference photo from SketchDaily, though I had to improvise on the lighting/shadows a bit. The limited color palette made the more complicated shadows of the photo quite hard to reproduce properly. You can see my struggles with it (and how I eventually resolved things) in the time-lapse below!

Here's my twenty-ninth illustration for Drawrch, and I barely made it under the wire with this one!

I had some work to get done this evening, and wasn't ready to start drawing until 10 PM. I though I might do something simple, and once again, I got into the flow, lost track of time, and next thing I knew an hour and a half had passed. I'm happy with the result though!

I sketched this one with the Procreate Pencil brush, then colored it with the Inka brush. I really like the rough edges of Inka - I'll have to play with it more after I'm done with this project.

Reference image came from SketchDaily.

This is my twenty-eighth illustration for Drawrch - almost at the end!

Once again, I used the Procreate Pencil for sketching and the Syrup brush for everyone else. I still need to practice using different line weights, but it's coming more naturally to me now.

For this one, I tried a different lighting technique where most of the character is in shadow and only the edges of him are lit by a backlight. I really like how it turned out!

Here's my twenty-seventh illustration for Drawrch. It's an old lady with her cat!

This was a little bit of a quickie cartoon. As always, I used the Procreate Pencil brush for the sketch, and my new favorite, the Syrup brush, for everything else.
