Psychonauts 2 Is Sweet

Martin · 3 years

I've been picking my way through Psychonauts 2 ever since it came out, and aside from gathering all the game's collectibles, I'm finally nearing the end of the game. It's been a fun ride so far, and I feel like the premise of the game - going into people's minds to help them sort out hang-ups - has aged extremely well.

I really like this game. The story is fun, the levels are diverse and interesting, the art and music are top-notch, and the heart of the game is just genuinely sweet. This game is a triumph for Double Fine!

Psychonauts 2

So Psychonauts 2 is coming later this year, and it looks a lot like the first game, with eccentric characters, zany levels, and a number of twists and turns in how each zone plays out. The original game came out 16 years ago, and it's a testament to the game's creativity that anyone still remembers it.

Part of my memory of the original game is complete frustration; the final sequence, in particular, had a number of tricky jumps and it took me many tries to complete it.

Most everything else I remember of Psychonauts is pleasant, so I'm hopeful that this sequel smooths over those difficult moments somewhat, as Double Fine creates such amazing experiences, it feels extra bad when you can't muster the skill to see all of it.

Costume Quest

Martin · 12 years

Back in 2010, a week or so before Halloween, Double Fine Productions released Costume Quest. Somewhere between then and a month or two ago, I bought it on XBLA, and I finally got around to actually playing it about a week ago. It's a cute, fun little game, and I enjoyed it.

It's basically a light RPG-type game, where you run around neighborhoods trick-or-treating houses, collecting candy, costumes, and battle stamps (which improve your abilities in combat). Encounters with monsters are the meat of the game and trigger a sequence where the cute cartoon children and silly monsters morph into giants who do battle over the town in a turn-based RPG style. It kind of reminds me of that episode of South Park where the kids morph into anime characters and battle each other.

The cartoon graphics are crisp and colorful, and the sound design is simple, but does all the appropriate things. Controls are easy. Overall, it's a shorter, but quality title - the quality of which I've come to expect from Double Fine.

If you haven't played Costume Quest yet, I'd recommend it. Maybe save it as a little Halloween treat for later this year.
