Drawrch 2024 #27: Paint

Martin · 269 days
An illustration of a man looking to the right. The man has a light complexion, dark eyes, and bleached red/orange hair that is dark at the roots. His hair is being blown up and backward, and his mouth is slightly agape. He has bits of blue-green paint all over his neck and face, and he is wearing a blue shirt. The background is a blue of bright outdoor colors, but mostly turquoise and green. The man is drawn in a partial comic book style, and a lot of the shading is accomplished via halftone patterns in various colors.

Here's today's Drawrch illustration - a man covered in paint!

When I picked out the reference photo foir this one, I thought the guy in the picture was just having colored light bouncing onto his skin. When I actually sat down to draw it, however, I realized that he also seems to be covered in bits of paint here and there. I have no idea why.

This drawing was kind of an experiment and is a mashup of a bunch of different styles/techniques that I have used in other drawings in this series. It mostly works though, and I think I am getting some good practice in with the halftone shading.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for some underlying linework, the Soft air brush for shading, the Hard air brush for the very faint background Bokeh effect. Additionally, I used two brushes from True Grit Texture Supply: the Smooth Natural Nib brush from The Rusty Nib pack, and the Rough Dot Shader 45deg/light brush for the halftone pattern from the Beat Tones pack.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #26: Looking Up

Martin · 270 days
An illustration of a woman looking up and to the left. Her face is angled toward the viewer and tilted slightly to the side, and her eyes are turned away. She has a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. Her hair is up, but some strands hang down, framing her face. She has very thick eyelashes and is wearing a large, bejeweled earring. The style of the image is somewhat loose and painterly.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman looking up!

I started out with this one with the intention of making something a bit loose and caricature-ish. But then I began coloring it in and it ended up looking a like many of the other drawings in this series. I don't dislike it, but I wish I would've been able to stick to my original plan. Oh well!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, the Soft air brush and Old Brush for shading, and the Fat Nozzle spray paint brush for background texture.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #25: Cold

Martin · 271 days
An illustration of a man wearing a dark blue hood, looking at the viewer. The man has a light complexion, blue-green eyes, and a tuft of blond hair sticking out from the opening of the hood. He has a small bit of stubble under his lip and on his chin. The shoulders of his sweatshirt are wool. The background color is a cold mix of light blue and some pink. The drawing is done in a painted, slightly stylized way.

Here's today's Drawrch illustration: a guy in a hood looking rather cold.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, the Soft air brush for shading, the Oil Paint brush for a little bit of the blending, and the Old Brush for the rest of the blending.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #24: Sure, I Guess

Martin · 272 days
An illustration of a woman looking at the viewer. The woman has a slight smile and has her head cocked to the side. She has a light complexion, dark brown eyes, and long brown hair that fades to blond. She has light freckles on her nose. The background is a messy light and dark teal, split in the middle.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman smiling at the viewer with her head cocked to the side, as if to say, "sure, I guess". This is the final week of this project!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, the Soft air brush for some light shading, the Fat Nozzle spray paint brush for texture, and the Tarraleah brush for background texture.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #23: Glasses

Martin · 273 days
An illustration of a man with his head turned slightly away from the viewer, but with his eyes still looking this way. The man has a long face and dark eyebrows and hair. He has on a pair of glasses and has a neutral expression on his face. The drawing is rendered with the man highlight and shadow over a messy background of gold, red, and purple, which overlap onto him and give him extra bits of shading on the left and right sides.

For today's Drawrch illustration, I drew a dude in a similar style as some of my other drawings from this project, but with a more colorful background.

Originally, I had planned on just having the drawing be plain red in the background, but at the last minute decided to try some color. After mulling over it a bit, I settled on this design. It's not perfect, but I like the messy background coloring bleeding into the shading of the subject. I think it makes it less mundane/safe.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Tarraleah brush for background texture/shading.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #22: Neon

Martin · 274 days
An illustration of a woman looking to the right. She has a medium-dark complexion, dark eyes, and long dark hair with an undercut, brushed down the opposite side of her head. She has a barbell earring through a septum nose piercing and large hoop earrings. She is lit from behind with a bright blue light and in a purple shadow on the left. The background is a light purple color.

Today's Drawrch illustration took me a while to get done - almost 3 hours in total, according to Procreate. I had a really hard time getting the shading right, and ended up changing course halfway through.

In the end, I was able to add some colorful flair to the image however, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, even if it wasn't really what I'd originally intended it to be.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Soft air brush for gradients. I also used some brushes from True Grit Texture Supply: the Smooth Natural Nib brush for linework and the Grainy Dot Shader (45deg/light) for shading. These are from the Rusty Nib pack and the Beat Tones pack, respectively.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #21: Flip Phone

Martin · 275 days
An illustration of a man talking on a flip phone. The man is facing to the right and his eyes are looking to the right, away from the viewer. His left hand is holding a flip phone up to his head. He has a slightly concerned look on his face, and his mouth is slightly open and crooked to the side. He has a light complexion, blue-green eyes, stubbly brown facial hair and very short brown hair. His hairline is receding. He is wearing a light blue dress shirt. Three lines are emanating from the man's forehead. The background is a streaky light turquoise that fades to white towards the bottom of the image.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a guy on his flip phone - that's three weeks of daily face drawings done!

I'm not really sure if I like this one or not. I like parts of it, and it's sort of pleasing to look at in its finished form. But I can't decide if I think it's good or not. It feels a little trapped between caricature and not, I guess?

The purpose of this project, and the others like it that I've done, haven't really been to always make good art, but just to get a daily session in, for practice. Still, I want them to be good (and sometimes they are!).

Anyway, as always, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Dry Brush paint brush for some shading and texture.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #20: Laughing 4

Martin · 276 days
An illustration of a woman looking downward and laughing. With her head pitched forward, her eyes are not visible except for a small glint of light in one eye. She has a stud nose piercing and large, fluffy hair. She is wearing a white top and overalls visible on one shoulder. The drawing is rendered with a single color and only pure black and white used for shadows and highlights.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman looking downward and laughing.

It took me a long time to get the sketch right on this one, because this is a funny angle to draw for me. I was also planning on making the singular color blue up until the very end, then decided it looked too Smurfy, and opting for something warmer. 😎

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Inka brush for everything else.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2024 #19: Sunglasses

Martin · 278 days
An illustration of a man in profile, wearing sunglasses, and looking down, presumably at a cell phone. The man has a mustache and beard, and thick dark hair that is styled high. He is squinting slightly, and has a solemn look, but his expression is mostly unreadable. He is wearing a spotted shirt. The image was rendered in unrealistic colors, with the man in pink and purple and the background a very light green-blue.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a man in sunglasses looking down at his cell phone.

I don't know why, but I was feeling a bit off with this one. I started out drawing the man's ear for some reason, and it took me a while to get my bearings right. After I finished the sketch, I decided to change things up a bit and use some weird colors. It's a little brighter than I wanted it to be, but overall, I like it.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for the background gradient.

Drawrch 2024 #18: Staring

Martin · 278 days
An illustration of a woman staring to the right. The drawing is in black and white and in a split style between caricature and comic book. The woman has a strong, square jaw, slightly pouted lips, and large hoop earrings. She has dark eyebrows and long flowing hair that fills the bottom half of the image. She has a serious look on her face. The shading in the image is accomplished through a halftone pattern.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman staring to the side, in black and white.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and brushes from True Grit Texture Supply for the rest. This includes the Smooth Natural Nib for linework, the Grainy Dot Shader (45 deg/light) for shading, and the Halftone Stamp 7 for background texture.
