Inktober 2024 #15: Guidebook

An illustration of the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook, along with official scouting hat and merit badge sash, from the DuckTales series. The items are all sitting on a light purple surface lit by a spotlight, at an isometric angle. The guidebook is red with a dark red title band on the top side. It has a gold diamond affixed to the front, and a green ribbon bookmarker coming out of the middle of the book. The hat looks like a fuzzy brown cylinder with an animal tail coming out the top back. The hat has a gold diamond medallion affixed to the front, and the tail has a white tip. The merit badge sash is an army green color, and various unidentifiable badges are sewn to it, in red, yellow, and blue, and in circles and a diamond shape.

Today's Inktober prompt was "guidebook", and so I had one of two choices: draw the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook.

It's been a long time since I read Hitchhiker's Guide, and my memories of how things were described are hazy (and colored by the visuals from the 1994 "illustrated" version), so I figured I'd go with the ducks on this one.

For anyone who isn't familiar, the Junior Woodchucks are a scouting organization that Huey, Dewey, and Louie belong to in the DuckTales show and comics. In the show, this guidebook is always presented as an encyclopedia of nearly all knowledge, in which the ducks often find hyper specific facts related to whatever current adventure they happen to be on.

So anyway, that's what I draw for today's illustration, along with a Junior Woodchuck hat and merit badge sash. 😊

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for some light shading.

If you'd like to see how I drew this one, you can watch the time-lapse below:
