Drawrch 2026 #14: Amused

Martin · 81 days
An illustration of a woman smiling very slightly and looking downward at something. Her head is angled to the left slightly, away from the viewer. She is squinting her eyes slightly, and she looks like she might be mildly amused. She has a pale complexion, faint freckles, sandy blond hair, and green eyes. She is wearing a blue jacket with an open front. The background is a gold color that fades to white behind the woman and to the left.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman looking slightly amused.

This is my second attempt to draw this woman, the first being my very first Drawrch illustration this year. The first time, I just couldn't get the expression correct, and so I gave up until I was a bit more "warmed up" for the project.

Waiting paid off in terms of the sketch; I was able to do that party fairly quickly and felt like it looked pretty nice compared to the reference. Choosing a style and coloring it turned out to be quite a challenge though, and so I'm posting this one late.

To be fair, I like how it looks at the end. I just hate that it took so much effort to get there! 😅

Anyway, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for shading. I tried a lot of other things in there, but I'm not naming all the brushes I experimented with because they didn't end up in the final piece. The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from SketchDaily.

Drawrch 2026 #13: Wince

Martin · 82 days
An illustration of a man looking to the right and wincing slightly. The man has a medium dark complexion, dark eyes, short hair, and beard. His eyes are squinted slightly, and his mouth is slightly open. His head is angled away from the viewer at an oblique angle, and his eyes are looking further to the right. He is wearing a gray shirt with a plaid shirt over it. The background is a teal green, and the drawing is done in a loose, painterly style.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a man wincing.

I'm not sure if I captured his expression completely accurately - you can see that I started drawing this pretty loose and then tightened up the sketch at the end before "inking" - but it still reads "wince" to me, so I'm alright with it.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, and the Old brush paint brush for shading.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from Line of Art.

An illustration of a woman looking to the left. The woman has a vacant look on her face, with eyes partially closed and mouth very slightly open. She has a medium complexion, orange eyes, dark eyebrows, and she is wearing brown lipstick. She is wearing a black choker. Her hair is large and wavy, and fills almost all of the edges of the canvas. The upper left corner is uncovered, with a pale green blotchy background visible behind. The woman is drawn in a caricature style.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a woman looking to the left. I've wanted to draw this image for a while but couldn't settle on a good style for it. I'm glad I finally decided to go for it tonight, because I'm happy with how it turned out!

Drawrch 2026 #11: Glad

Martin · 84 days
An illustration of a man looking to the right. The man is smiling slightly, with mouth closed and head turned to an oblique angle. His eyes are looking further to the side and his mouth is closed. He is drawn in unrealistic colors, but he has a pale complexion and medium eyes and hair. He is slightly overweight and is wearing a t-shirt with a large neck. The man is drawn in lines and colored in hues of blue, with a pale green background behind.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a man looking to the side, with a slight smile.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Inka brush for shading.

Drawrch 2026 #10: Tongue Out!

Martin · 85 days
An illustration of a woman staring at the viewer and sticking her tongue out. The woman's face is scrunched, her eyes squinted, brows slightly frowning, and mouth wide open. Her tongue is sticking out, covering her bottom teeth. She has a light complexion and dark eyes and hair. Her hair is pulled back by a white headband that goes behind her ears. The drawing is done in black and white over a tan background.

Today's Drawrch illustration was supposed to be a quick one, but I let things get out of hand and... here we are. 😅

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Molesworth brush for everything else.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from Line of Art.

An illustration of a cartoon pirate looking on in fear at an unseen enemy. The pirate has a long face and nose and medium complexion. He has dark eyes, a thin mustache, and a curly goatee. His hair is brown. His mouth is open in fear. He is wearing a red and white striped bandana over his hair, a red sash around his neck, a blue and white striped shirt, and a brown leather strap over his shoulder. The background is bright red with a dark choppy ocean, a pirate ship, and a small island in the distance. The sky is littered with clouds that, along with the horizon line, curve from the perspective. The illustration is styled to look like an old comic book print.

Another busy day where I didn't get to sit down and draw until very late... so here's another cartoon face for Drawrch!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Rusty Nib 1 brush for linework, the Rough Dot Shader 45 Light and Rough Dot Shader 60 Light brushes for halftone shading, and the Worn 1 Subtle, Worn 2 Subtle, Worn 3 Subtle, and Toner Grit Fine 2 brushes for texture. Additionally, I used the Syrup brush to assist with fills.

The Rusty Nib brush is from the Rusty Nib pack, the Rough Dot shader brushes are from the Beat Tones pack, and the Worn and Toner Grit brushes are from the Fast Grit pack, all by True Grit Texture Supply.

Drawrch 2026 #8: Stare

Martin · 87 days
An illustration of a woman staring into the distance. The woman is in near-profile, facing the left, into a bright sunlight. She has a light complexion and green eyes. Her eyes are squinting and looking very slightly away from her face's direction, more toward the viewer. Her lips are almost entirely closed, but not firmly, and she is scowling slightly. Her red hair is tied up behind her head, going out of the upper right corner of the image frame. She is illuminated by the sun, with bright highlights on her face and indigo shadows on her neck and back. The woman is drawn in a slight caricature style, with her noise and eyes larger than they should be. The background is a blurry, noisy landscape of water and distant trees.

For today's Drawrch illustration, I went for another caricature-ish style, with a quick sketch and some exaggeration in the proportions.

I'm fairly certain I've drawn this woman before, for a previous Drawrch project. I made the nose a little heavier than it should be, and she has a little bit of a lumpy look to her. I have a harder time making drawings of women look like caricatures than men.

Still, I enjoyed making this piece, and I'm having a good time exploring doing this style of shading. I need to keep practicing!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, the Old Brush paint brush for shading, the Inka brush for some extra textured lines, and the Soft air brush for fading some of the other stuff.

Drawrch 2026 #7: Emerging

Martin · 88 days
An illustration of a man's face with an unfinished edge, giving it the impression of emerging from the background. The man appears to be somewhat young and has a serious look on his face. The left eye is squinting just a bit more than the right, and his gaze is set directly on the viewer. His lips are closed, His face is drawn as if it was done in charcoal, with black for shadows and white for highlights. The background and neutral color is a dark blue green.

Today's Drawrch illustration is of a younger man's face emerge from the flat color of the background.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, and the Molesworth brush for everything else. This is actually the first time I've really used the "new" brushes from Procreate's updated brush library. It's not bad!

Drawrch 2026 #6: Pink Hat

Martin · 89 days
An illustration of a girl wearing a pink hat and shirt, drawn in profile. The girl is wearing her hat backwards, and blond bangs are sticking out of the hole in back of the hat, covering her eyes. Curved blond hair is hanging out at the back of her head, touching her shoulder. She has a grin on her face. The girl is drawn in the style of a Gorillaz character, with a slightly protruding jaw, and has the look and texture of an old comic book page, with rough ink lines, distressed color, halftone shading, and mis-registered blocks of color. The background is a light purple.

Here's yesterday's Drawrch illustration - a girl in a pink hat and shirt, drawn in a sort-of Gorillaz-ish style.

I drew this while I was waiting at the ER! We were there from 5 PM to 2 AM. Everyone's alright thankfully, but it was a long day, and I didn't get a chance to upload anything before now.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Rusty Nib 1 brush for linework, the Rough Dot Shader 45 Light brush for halftone shading, the Worn 2 Subtle and Worn 3 Subtle brushes for texture, and the Syrup brush for fills and other utility.

The Rusty Nib brush is from the Rusty Nib pack, the Rough Dot brush is from the Beat Tones pack, and the Worn Subtle brushes are from the Fast Grit pack. Those are all by True Grit Texture Supply.

Drawrch #5: Green Shirt

Martin · 90 days
An illustration of a man looking to the left and smiling. The drawing is done in a caricature style, with the man's various features exaggerated. The man has a long face, high forehead, large protruding nose, and smile with only top teeth showing. The man's short hair is parted to the side, and he has a trim mustache and beard. He has a pale complexion and freckles, green eyes, and light brown hair and beard. He is wearing a green collared shirt with a dark undershirt visible. The background is a light slate color, with a faint glow behind the man.

For today's Drawrch illustration, I wanted to do more of a caricature.

To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of (most) caricatures. A lot of them overly rely on exaggerating features and less on actual likeness. But it's hard to do them without exaggerating features, since that's sort of the name of the game.

I'm not super practiced with caricatures, so I might be falling into the latter category here, but I enjoyed making it and it bears at least a little resemblance to my reference. Maybe I can do more as this project progresses!

Anyway, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Inka brush for linework, the Flicks spray paint brush for texture, the Old Brush paint brush for the majority of the shading, and the Soft air brush for the rest.

The photo I used as a reference for this drawing is from Line of Art.
