Februdoodle 2024 #5: Aftermath

Martin · 290 days

Here's my fifth illustration for Februdoodle!

Yesterday there was a massive windstorm here, and this morning my son and I walked around the neighborhood observing the aftermath. Branches were everywhere, along with downed garbage cans, shingles, and other various debris. At least three fences were blown over, one massive tree was completely toppled, and one of my neighbors' roof got torn partly off!

So this drawing was inspired by all that. Hopefully it doesn't happen again anytime soon!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, and the Inka brush for everything else.

Today's Februdoodle was an idea that popped into my head last night: an artist and his child working side by side. I didn't think about the idea of leaving one canvas black until I started working on it, but I really like the idea of the child having less trouble just getting started on something. Especially as many of these illustrations start with me staring at a blank canvas for a long time.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Inka brush for texture.

Februdoodle 2024 #3: Mailbox

Martin · 292 days

Today's Februdoodle is a little late, so I didn't have that much time to think about what I might do, let alone to work on it. Still, I like how it turned out, though I do feel like it's missing something in the background. Oh well!

I was mildly inspired by the mailbox monster from the original Toejam & Earl game, and also from the mimic monsters found in various fantasy movies and games.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Hartz brushe for background texture.

Februdoodle 2024 #2: Hamburger

Martin · 294 days

I had a hamburger for lunch today, so I thought I'd draw one for Februdoodle. I'm glad this didn't happen at the restaurant! 😆

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft airbrush for gradients.

An illustration of a smiling cartoon poodle enthusiastically giving a thumbs up. The word "Februdoodle" is drawn in a lively font below. The letters are yellow and orange, and the poodle is a blue-ish gray with puffy, very pale blue fur.

Last year I started an illustration project in February called "Februdoodle", and I am continuing it this year! Each day I create a new a new doodle and post it online. No theme or stories, just (hopefully) fun.

My first Februdoodle drawing for 2024 is a Februdoodle Poodle. Maybe he can be the mascot? 😆

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Fat Nozzle, Splatter, and Flicks spray paint brushes for background texture.

Piranha Plant 2023 – Up Close

Martin · 359 days

Here's one more render of the same animation, with a closer camera, so you can really appreciate the details of the saliva. 😆

I did make one small change to the animation from the original "in the round" version. I noticed that in a few frames, the tongue clipped through the teeth, so I fixed that. Thankfully, only about 80 frames had to be re-rendered - the rest remained the same.

After rigging up the piranha plant, I had to do an animation - so here's a simple "idle" animation of the plant just hanging out in its pot, as the camera spins around to show the entire plant.

It was never really meant to be viewed from the back, so the part where the "feathers" stick out is a tiny bit dicey. I also had some issues getting my rig to work the mouth properly, and spent way too much time editing the curves on the flying spittle. Overall though, I really like how this turned out!

Piranha Plant 2023

I opened up this project one more time to play around with Blender 4.0 and ended up doing a fair bit of alterations to it, including fully rigging the piranha plant, adding better lighting, and re-working a lot of the materials to make them fully procedural.

Some of the materials still rely on textures, but I've removed most of the more unnecessary ones - and largely improved the materials in the process. More to come!

Morning Coffee

Martin · 1 year

Sometimes I like taking work from other mediums and recreating it in Blender. This morning I saw this post on Mastodon, and though it might be a good warm-up.

It took a bit longer than I expect, but I'm happy with it. And it doesn't tread too hard on the original, in my opinion, which is good when I'm pulling inspiration from other people's work.

This was the final version of my cereal shuffling machine animation, where tons of cereal gets dropped into the scene, and then slowly churned away.

I had to add some special, hidden physics blocks to keep all the cereal contained as it was disposed of, but you can't really tell from the limited view. I also adjusted the background to be a little warmer for this one. I was getting tired of the colder blue/purple fade.

It took a long time to render this one - 2,290 frames, each taking 6-10 seconds to finish.
