June Toons 2024 #10: Fresh Air

Martin · 163 days
A cartoon illustration of a cat leaning out of a window to smell a flower. The cat is orange and shaded in a very simple way, with only a single shaft of shadow passing over its bottom quarter. Similarly, the entire scene has a parallel diagonal purple shadow across the bottom third, a pastel blue, and then a diagonal white at the top. The flower has large white petals and a gold center, with a long green vine leading it out away from the window.

For today's June Toons cartoon, I drew a cat leaning out the window to smell a flower. This is a small celebration I'm having for the end of my spring allergies (RIP cooler weather, though 😔).

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Smooth Natural Nib brush for everything else. That one's from the Rusty Nib brush pack from True Grit Texture Supply.

A cartoon illustration of an oddly proportioned duck in a blue sailor's shirt, red bow tie, and sailor's hat. The duck is white with gold beak, legs, and feet, and he has a large round head. He has a blank look on his face. The background is gray with a lighter wedge shape going behind the duck.

Today's June Toons cartoon is another pretty basic one, but maybe that's just going to be the theme for this project. It's been tough finding time this month!

As usual, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, and the Smooth Natural Nib brush for linework. That one's from the Rusty Nib pack by True Grit Texture Supply.

June Toons 2024 #7: Day & Night

Martin · 166 days
A cartoon illustration of an anthropomorphized beer bottle sitting on top of an anthropomorphized coffee mug. The beer bottle has a drunk look on his face and a bubble popping effect happening in the air in front of him. He is a glossy green with a pale-yellow paper label. He is looking at the viewer and waving. The coffee mug is looking up at the beer bottle with a slightly pained and annoyed look. He is a glossy light blue. He is filled with coffee and some of it is splashing out to the side. The background transitions sharply at an angle between a lavender and gold color, from top to bottom, to represent night and day.

Since this June Toons cartoon is coming in on a Friday, I'm closing out the first week with an ode to the drinks of day and of night. ☕🍺

This has been a weird week for me personally, so I've had a hard time getting these drawings done at a reasonable hour each day. So far, I've been enjoying the infusion of creativity though. On to the next week!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Syrup brush for linework.

June Toons 2024 #6: Say What?

Martin · 167 days
A cartoon illustration of a dog looking at the viewer with a confused look on his face, as if he's thinking, "What did you just say?" The dog is a bright orange with a round head, a very large collar, and a crooked tail. His nose and the collar are a dark blue. He is holding a juice box in one hand, but it is tilted away from him, as if he was interrupted while drinking it. The juice box is a light blue. The background is green with a green-yellow circle behind the dog.

Today's June Toons cartoon is a dog interrupted from drinking his juice box, by something you said. What the heck did you say?

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Smooth Natural Nib from the Rusty Nib pack by True Grit Texture Supply.

A cartoon illustration of the cereal mascot Cap'n Crunch hunched over a bowl of Crunch Berries cereal, with a spoon in his mouth. He looks concerned and lost. He has a light complexion, a large, curled mustache, and is wearing a blue admiral's outfit, which is in bad shape. It has a patch on the elbow, and his hat has a hole in it. The "C" on his hat is also falling off. There are bits of cereal laying on the table around him.

I barely got done with today's June Toons cartoon - whew! This one is of a dejected Cap'n Crunch. He's eating some Crunch Berries to console himself. We've all been there, haven't we?

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for background gradient.

June Toons 2024 #4: Red Crayon

Martin · 169 days
A cartoon illustration of a boy scribbling all over his drawing paper with a red crayon. The crayon and the hand gripping it are in the foreground, and you can see various scribbles on the paper below. The crayon has a small mouth on it that appears to be screaming. The boy is leaning into his work in the background, and has his tongue sticking out and up, as if he's concentrating. The boy has a light complexion, brown hair, and a stubby nose, and he is wearing a gray-blue shirt.

My June Toons illustration for today is a kid doing a LOT of scribbling with his favorite red crayon. 😆

I seem to be having some trouble getting these out on time this week, which is a bit of a bummer for the opening week of the project, but I'm hoping things will smooth out as things go on.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Fat Nozzle spray paint brush for some light texture.

A cartoon illustration of "Twinkie The Kid", a mascot used for Twinkie snack cakes. This version of Twinkie The Kid has him hunched over slightly and squinting at an unseen adversary. He has on his signature white cowboy hat and gloves, and a blue handkerchief with red heard pattern tied around his neck. He is holding a six shooter in his hand, pointed upward. Smoke is coming out of the barrel, as if the gun has just been fired.

Here's my second entry for June Toons - anyone remember this guy? It's Twinkie the Kid, but with a little more grit than the old days. 🤠

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching and the Soft air brush for shading. Additionally, I used the Smooth Natural Nib brush for linework, from the Rusty Nib brush pack by True Grit Texture Supply.

June Toons 2024 #1: Triking

Martin · 172 days
A cartoon illustration of a boy riding a tricycle toward the viewer. The boy has his tongue sticking out and beads of sweat flying off, and looks like he' struggling. The hot summer sun is hanging over him in the sky, and the words "June Toons!" float in the sky above and behind him. The boy has orange-reddish skin from the sun's shade and sandy blond hair. He is wearing a green t-shirt with a gold star on it, blue shorts, and a lime-green bike helmet and shoes. The tricycle is blue with chrome accents. The words "June Toons!" are a shiny pink with a dark outline.

Just when I'm getting used to having tons of free time every day, it's time for another illustration project: June Toons 2024!

As usual, this is a project where I create a new cartoon illustration every day of the month of June.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, the Soft air brush for gradients, and the Fat Nozzle spray paint brush for background texture.

June Toons 2023 #30: Escape!

Martin · 1 year

It's finally here - my last illustration for 2023's June Toons!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and Old Beach and Tarraleah brushes for background texture, along with some help from the Splatter spray paint brush and the Soft air brush.

June Toons went by quickly this year and I learned a lot as I went. I'm really happy with how these all turned out, and I'm glad that I have been able to share them with you. Seriously: thanks for viewing, and I hope that you've enjoyed the ride along with me!

As always, if you'd like to see how I drew this one, you can watch the time-lapse below.

Additionally, there's a YouTube playlist for all of 2023's June Toons drawings here.
