My tenth illustration for June Toons is a wrestler chugging an energy drink!

I barely made it under the wire with this one! I sketched it and got the lines down earlier in the day, but didn't have time to color it until late, and ended up getting into a lot of detail with it. I like how it turned out though!

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, the Soft air brush for gradients, and the Splatter spray paint brush for background texture.

This is my ninth illustration for June Toons: The Wild West! Like so many of these things, it took me a long time to figure out where to start. I almost just drew the tissue box on my desk ("toons" don't have to all be characters, right? 😅) but then had an idea about one character looking sharply down at another. It turned out better than I expected, though I don't really like the way the lower guy squishes down... but oh, well.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for everything else.

June Toons 2023 #8: Angry Horse

Martin · 331 days

For today's June Toons illustration, the start of the second week, I wanted to do something a bit more basic - so here's an angry horse!

I don't really draw horses much, so this turned out pretty good in my opinion. Heavily (and probably obviously) influenced by Ren & Stimpy.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft air brush and Splatter and Flicks spray paint brushes for background texture.

This is my seventh illustration for June Toons, "To The Moon!"

I'm happy with how this one turned out, but a week into this project, I am still really having a hard time breaking away from my usual cartoon style and drawing a little bit looser... I almost started this sketch over again after getting it done because I wanted the boy to look more stylized. I think it will just take more time/practice, as all things do.

As usual, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft air brush for some depth.

June Toons 2023 #6: Chop! Chop!

Martin · 333 days

Here's my sixth illustration for June Toons: a lady lumberjack chasing down a poor little tree.

I am definitely getting into a good rhythm with my line weights, but I'm also thinking more about that stuff as I make the underlying sketch, so it's hard to quantify the benefits of this practice. Still, I had fun drawing this - I usually draw my lumberjacks as squat, bearded men.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, and the Syrup brush for linework. I used the Soft air brush, the Tarraleah brush, and the Splatter and Flicks spray paint brushes for the background texture.

For my fifth June Toons illustration, I drew a bear being entertained. 🐻🍿

It was good practice for color and line weight control, and I liked getting some texture in there with the hatched shading, which is something I used to do more with pen and paper (and a lot less with digital, for some reason).

June Toons 2023 #4: Debts Paid

Martin · 334 days

My fourth June Toons illustration turned a little dark (and got a little meme-y).

I wasn't sure what I wanted to draw, and after sitting there thinking about it for too long, I just started drawing a guy smoking. I wanted it to look more like some kind of henchman - with a heavier man and maybe less of a story, but after I added the hat, he started looking like a mobster, and that was it for me. I threw in a building in flames and some dramatic lighting and it was done.

I didn't intend for it to look like the famous Disaster Girl meme, but it's kind of funny that it does.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft airbrush and Tarraleah brush for background texture.

June Toons 2023 #3: Coffee Rat

Martin · 336 days

This rat wound up in a carafe, and he is not too happy about it! This is my third illustration for June Toons 2023.

I tried to loosen my style up a bit for this one and it was definitely more fun to make, but I want to keep working on that. Line weights remain my nemesis.

June Tunes 2023 #2: Curious Cat

Martin · 336 days

This June Toon was inspired by a cat my son and I spotted earlier today on a walk. It seemed a bit hesitant about us at first, but then curiosity got the better of it and it bounded toward us to investigate. It was very friendly!

I liked the subject enough, but I wasn't really feeling inspired by this one at first (and you can see that I changed course drastically after the first version of the sketch). Once I got colors in, I started warming up to it. As this project progresses, I hope I can get a little more loose/wild with the linework, though.

This one was especially tough because I was working on it in between sets of my workout routine, and the slight sweatiness on my hands made it hard to make smooth strokes across the iPad screen.

Anyway, this was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Soft airbrush and Decimals brush for some detail work.

Here we go again with another month-long drawing project! This one is called June Toons, and it's a revival of an old project from 2019, by the same name.

This was created in Procreate with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, using the Procreate Pencil brush for sketching, the Syrup brush for linework, and the Splatter spray paint brush for background texture.
